Mod Help please
We listen and do respond to suggestions / feedback when we can ... ie. there's a 5 minute edit window; originally there was going to be none.
The only way to be totally private is not to post on the internet anywhere; disconnect completely - editing / deleting a message (similar goes for email, webpage, chat, IM, etc too) after the fact doesn't automatically make it disappear...
Information is often retained in ways that are not obvious - ie. for persons running on Windows XP and similar, some of their browsing activity is logged in multiple undocumented index.dat files, which are hidden; clearing browser history, etc doesn't erase the content of such files.
Nowhereman aptly quoted the portion of the Privacy policy that puts this whole privacy issue into layman's terms ...
Again to reiterate, privacy / risk management is the responsibility of the poster not us - when one posts a message on any publicly accessible message board, they should rightly assume the public, potentially including law enforcement, is going to view their message; save/archive it.Bottom line, it is ultimately up to visitors to protect their privacy and understand that there is no such thing as 100% privacy on the internet nor in the real world for that matter. It all comes down to managing risk and how much one is willing to accept.
Such risks can in all honestly only be reduced by the poster ... once one posts, what happens to their message is out of their hands, and out of our control - deleting, editing, etc after the fact won't make the message disappear for those folks who have already viewed it; archived it.
On a related topic, when one publishes (the boards is a publishing medium) their thoughts intended for others in the public (even if only limited to a sub-set) to read, it become part of the collective commons; no longer completely theirs...
To put this in layman's terms - how would you like to read a thread, especially one you had taken time to post in, and then later find much of the thread missing because of deleted posts - that's not fair to those seeking information, and especially not to those who took the time to respond; del has already hit upon this issue before.
Finally, again to reiterate for the zillionth time, privacy is ultimately the responsibility of the poster - as the old saying goes "loose lips sink ships" ... if one doesn't want others to know about something, don't tell them; don't post about it on public message boards, etc.
