A good distance to keep plants from CFL's is around 1-2". Air circulation is a must! to keep the heat off the canopy.
CFLs don't get as hot as one HID light but you still have to be careful; they DO get hot. Try touching a 20W CFL after it's been on for a few minutes.

Don't go closer than 2" until you hear from one of the veterans.
There's something called "lumen burn" so you might post the type and wattage of your CFLs. And also post how old your plants or seedlings are.

Yes, 1-2inches is as close as you can get, but you must have a fan blowing on the plant. If you don't, get one!
Or keep them about 4-5inches away from the tops. good luck.

everybody on the money...1-2" w/small fan...and they will burn up a leaf if you don't watch them, but not as bad as HID burns...

Actually you can get a CFL within a centimeter of the plant.
Given the proper wind, you can place your bulb right on the top....
Of course....you might have to raise it every 8 hours or so to accomodate the growth....

I've left my girls unattended for 48 hours. I moved the CFL's from 1" to a little under 5" before leaving. It's the only time the CFL's are not 1" or less from the plant tops. If a leaf tips touches a CFL, it will brown and curl away just at the point of impact. No other damage.
This is all just a goofy satire...sort of a National Lampoon thing and certainly only photos and ideas collected online.

I don't know about what was said about your flood light.
But go with what Harddon says.
With your fan keeping your leaves fluttering you can bring
your CFLs down close. To about 3/8" or a centimeter.

With CFL'S you want the plant as close as possible to the bulbs but not touching the actualy bulb.
