IS A HPS 400W, GOOD FOR VEG.?
Ya know, It makes no sense but I have seen people grow veg cycle with amazing success using flors, better than a lot of peoples plants that grow veg with HPS..
I have never seen flors out preform HPS in flowering..
With that being said, i have never seen anybody out grow me using a 400watt hps and they can use all the f--ing flors they want. HID's used correctly are the BEST.. veg flower whatever the f--k you want... if your plants are stretching and you are using HPS then something is wrong.. light is old or to far away from plant.. not enough air flow.. something.. but it is not the light...

Contrary to what the other replies tell you an HPS would be much better than fluros due to lumen output alone. I've benn growing for just over ten years and have never had a problem using an HPS bulb during vegitative growth. The plants do stretch a little but with fluros you will get much much more stretching and very airy buds. So basically in my opinion use the HPS light you have and you can use the fluros as supplemental lighting for the bottom of the plants. A better suggestion would be to use an Eye Hortilux Bulb or a MH Conversion Bulb but by no means is an HPS light inferior for vegitative growth however fluros are. Fluros have very low lumen ratings and are out of the optimum CRI range(Color Rendering Index) for cannabis growth not to mention produce small yields. The HPS bulb you own is anywhere between 50,000 to 55,000 lumens and the CRI rating is between 2.0 and 2.4. If you do follow my advice but want to purchase a hortilux bulb or a MH conversion bulb I would tell you to check out www.mdhydro.com for the lowest prices I've ever seen. I order from these guys all the time and are excellent to deal with. I myself use a 400 watt Eye Hortilux Super HPS bulb which provides 30% more light in the blue and green spectrum which are needed for healthy cannabis growth while still providing the nessacary red spectrum which is nessacary for flowering. Hope this was of help.

yo guys you're right for HPS....they're surely the real thing for both vegetation and flowering....what you don't really know is that even HPS bulbs have their types as well......there are two types of HPS....the GROLUX and the SHP-TS
GROLUX 400watt HPS = nominal power 400 watt, actual power 430watt...they contain an extra 30 watt of blue light and that makes them real good for vegetation and excellent for flowering
SHP-TS 400watt HPS= nominal power 400 watt, actual power 400 watt..these are oriented for use mainly during the flowering as their spectrum leans on the red and orange side making them a kick ass choice for flowering and good choice for vegetation
currenlty i am growing using 2x400 HPS, one bulb is GROLUX and one is SHP-TS over one 6sqft NFT tray each....i am on vegetation stage on 18/6 at a distance of 35-40 cm from top of plants with good airflow etc.
stick with the 400 watt GROLUX bulb as i think is the most efficient for being able to grow both stages with one bulb.....
one more thing that you must realise is that most, if not all, 1Kw HPS bulbs are SHP-TS type as they are usually used for flowering...
floros are good but HPS are better.....best choice for me (among 400,600,1000 watters) would be the 600watt GROLUX one from Sylvania emitting 100,000 lumens
while the 600watt SHP-TS type emits 90,000 lumens (rich in red&orange)

no, not unless you want to blow something up...you can however, buy hortilux bulb with enhanced blue spectrum that allow you to use bulb thru entire grow...
