For a begginer grower, I would suggest using something very simple and that doesn't include a lot of complicated numbers on the bag. I use this mix, still am, and works great.

First, choose a soil. Just get basic "potting" soil, sterilized. I buy mine at Wal-mart(Plantsmart) for under $5 a bag. You can get any brand, stay away from Miracle Grow products altogether. You can choose any brand of potting soil though. Just make sure it is sterilized soil, and it doesn't have a lot of filler(eg. bark). Just soil.

Once you have your soil, buy a bag of Vermiculite, or Perlite. It will be right next to the soil. Again, any brand is fine. Vermiculite or Perlite just helps keep the soil lighter, so the roots can plow through and water can be easily saturated.

Once you have your bag of soil, and vermiculite/Perlite, mix 1/3 verm/per. and 2/3 soil. Mix them together.

There you go! A simple and very effective mix. I suggest keep it simple until next time, so you don't get confused... Good luck.

No, it doesn't contain the nutes needed, you need to add those. You can buy soil with nutes already in it, but not enough for a plant to strive for.

Adding nutes shouldn't be that hard. It is very simple logic really.

Veg time get something high in N(N-P-K=3 #'s on the box)

Flowering time get something high in P

That's all really. Don't worry about what the letters mean at this point. Just buy some nutes, any brand, except Miracle Grow, and get some numbers that line up with the stage you're at. Here are a few examples.

    Vegging: 8-7-6, 5-1-1, 16-2-6

    Flowering: 10-15-10, 15-30-15, 10-52-10

You see how that works? Just get some nutes that match up with the stage you are in. If your plant is still on the 18/6 cycle, or 24/0, that is the veg time, get something high in N. If you're on the 12/12 cycle, budding stage , then get something high in P. Simple right? Good luck.

are you growing outside or in?You could always mix a bit of slow release fert like ozmacoat or nutracoat. What i would do if i was growing outside would be to add some chook shit , cow poo or mushroom compost.Mix one of those in with the soil then all you have to do is water and watch them babys grow...Happy days...

If you are going to wally's...get bone meal and blood meal and pulverized dolomitic lime(for ph buffer) and your set...it doesn't get any easier...
    10lb bag walmart soil...
    1/2 cup bone meal
    3/4 cup blood meal
    2 tbs...dol. lime
10-12 cups perlite....this is basically what chowder is telling you ...KISS
