Crack cocaine acts much quicker than cocaine hcl, due to different routes of administration. Smoked crack cocaine reaches the blood via the lungs and gets to the brain much quicker than insufflated cocaine hcl (within seconds), the effects are more intense but short lived. When you snort coke, it takes longer for all of the cocaine to get into the blood so the onset of effect is slower, subtle and longer lasting.
