Not even close. According to various sources, the number of Americans who regularly smoke marijuana varies between about 15 and 20 million, mostly depending on the definition of "regular user". Given that the current US population is about 270 million, this works out to between 5.5 to 7.4 percent of the total population who are regular users. Obtaining worldwide figures is more problematic, but I can see no reason why we cannot extrapolate the US figure to a good first-order approximation. I don't know what the percentage of regular heroin users is, but no doubt you are correct that it is considerably lower than the figure for marijuana use.

I think those numbers were meant to be % who have tried either drug. Though they were still probobly estimations. The point being that a significant portion of at least the U.S. population has tried marijuana with no fatalities.

Well, I took the phrase "use marijuana" to mean regular and ongoing use. If it's the percentage of people who have merely tried the drug you are interested in, then it's closer to 30% of the US population - approximately one in three.

Beeble, do you have %'s of high school students who have tried and/or regularly use marijuana. I tried googling, but I seem to be a bit off today. I remember the numbers being 60% of seniors had tried, and 40% had smoked in the last year, but I don't trust my memory.

i would say those numbers are about right =\ at my high school there was only a small pop. of people who didnt like stoners, most were "casual users" aka people who smoke at parties

true lol my towns pretty small, and its red-neck as it gets =\ one of a handful of schools in cali where you can learn to raise a farm animal and sell it to a butcher haha and my last year there was only 6 black kids in the whole town haha
