Once you have planted the seed you need to use light so the plant will reach for the light and stretch out of the soil and start to grow. What light are you using?

Okay now I am really confused.

When my seed has a taproot showing on it, I put her in soil and leave her in the dark for 2-3days, then I get a sprout. I have never used lights to get a sprout through soil.

The light is not needed until the
    seedling is actually breaking through
the soil 48-72 hrs after putting the
    germinated seed in the dirt.

    During those first two-three days,
gravity pulls the plants root downwards,
which then puts the plant on the right
track for a healthy life, peace I'm off to
    go camping for the weekend

I guess to each his own then. Personally I don't like always checking on my seedlings to see if I need to turn the light on or not. I just turn the light on and they do the rest. There is no damage done if you use lights or not in-fact I still believe it's better because it can help to warm the soil or grow medium. Seeds do like warmer temperatures and a seedling mat only heats the bottom and not the top of the soil where the seed is.

    Peace all.

The Sun is out when seeds naturally sprout so I would imagine using a light works too. That's what I did this time. They popped right out (3 of them anyway) with some 23watts cfl's over each one.

We all have our own ways of germinating, sprouting seeds. Leaving the light on for those 2-3days isn't a big deal. If you feel you'll have a better chance doing that, then do it. We're just here giving suggestions. Peace and good luck!
