Years ago, people read books instead of watching movies or listening to mp3s (hard to believe, I know). These books cost money, and the writers were supposed to be making money by selling these books. There are also these places, called "libraries", in which people could read the books (essentially taking everything from them they would normally pay for) without paying for them, making the potential profit to writers completely null and void. No copyright problems, no prosecution, no bullshit.

Pirating music is much the same as checking books out from the Library. It's true, you get to keep what you download, but with the inconsistency of hard drives today, and taking into consideration how often they crash, most files are temporary at best (besides, artist make their money from concerts, unequivocally. CD sales constitute pennies for musicians, so pirate your asses off). INFORMATION SHOULD BE FREE.
