You water only when the soil is dry. Dip your finger about an inch into the soil. If it is moist underneath, don't water, if it's dry, water. Put your plant through complete wet/dry cycles. When the soil gets dry, the roots search for water, that way they grow and expand in good health. Hope this helped.

I never ever let my vegging plants go completely dry.
During flower, its a different story all together....
But veg cycle I keep water in the pot.
It depends also on your grow medium. Super drainage and airy mediums require water more than other less airy mixes.
But as chowder says, let them go thru their cycles...just I dont ever let them dry completely. The plants can flower when dry, but when vegging, you want foilage growing...not roots searching for water.
Use the moist soil to keep the plant pushing up the nutes to the leaves. That is how you get the growth during veg state.
WHen dry, little or no foilage growth can take place.
Keep the soil moist.
The biggest reason people over water is they dont place small gravel or rocks at the bottom of the containers and the water "MUDS" in the bottom.
As for flowering, as you transplant just prior to....you give your roots a chance to grow to support the doubleing in size of the plant.
Since the flowers are 'succulents' they will retain some water thereby allowing the more dry soil environment and then the roots grow out searching for the water without keeping foilage growth suppressed!
Anyhow thats how I do it

We all have our own ways of watering, but it depends a lot on the medium as well. Some people like an airy soil mixture, I like mine fairly heavy. I just use vermiculite and potting soil. I water about every 2-3days. I let them dry out, in moderation of course. Never let them get bone dry, but don't have the soil mucky either, just a happy medium. Good luck.

Perlite works better if it is mixed in the soil and not just in the botom of the cup. The idea is for the roots to have an easy place to grow with out having to work to hard.
