i'm just taking a stab at this. i'm thinking that the music or sounds have to be previously measured. hertz measure the amount of frequency and frequency is the amount of occurences within a given time period (usually one second).

i would imagine that's why monks "ummm" when they are meditating?

USUALLY one second? No... always one second, actually. Hertz is how many times a given tone's waveform oscillates in one second. A 440Hz tone is the tuning standard (A above middle C, if I'm not mistaken). Music is made up of MANY different tones, changing constantly, and cannot be simply measured in Hz. The 400/404Hz tones would not really qualify as "music", but rather just two separate tones.

I'd like to try this, and I think I will generate a wave with these test tones now... I hope it does more than just annoy me with the beat frequency.

my friend is extremely into lucid dreaming and things like that and he has tapes that just play different tones on. He will sit there and be completly entranced just with his head phones on listenening to a constant droning sound....he has loads of these tapes with different frequencys on them and he says they do different things. Somthing about shakras (sp) aswell.
