NEW YORK -- A Yemeni cleric has been sentenced to 75 years in a U.S. jail for backing militant groups.

As the cleric was led away, he asked, "Your honor, what have I done?"

Sheik Mohammed Ali Hassan al-Moayad was convicted of conspiring to support al-Qaida and Hamas. He was secretly recorded promising to send more than $2 million to Hamas during a meeting with two FBI informants in Germany.

The federal judge in New York called the recordings "chilling." He said, "We all remember September the 11th."

One of the informants set himself on fire outside the White House last November. He later said that was an attempt to get more money from the FBI.

The informant testified at the trial that the sheikh had boasted of giving Osama bin Laden $20 million before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
