I can say I'm one of those guilty of that, but it's from a bad habit since elementary school. When I say it, I intend to use it in an aspect where a thread is lame. Obviously I could've used better choice of words, but all degoratory terms have multiple meanings. However not until you raise awareness that I realized the term offends people. People use it so casually you don't really think twice.
