Some Native American tribes in the mid-west and plains states are said to have incorporated tobacco into their spiritual practices by smoking very large amounts at one time, after which they would have the sensation of being lifted to the heavens. Keep in mind, though, that most Native Americans smoked tobacco only on occassion, if at all, so those who used tobacco to visit the heavens likely had a very low tolerance to nicotine and any other psychotropic agents in tobacco when they did smoke.
