Cropping and topping is about the same thing. Both remove the main stock tip. One you clone so it's a little bigger the other you trash just the tip.

Pinching is a third technique - In the short pinching is a stress technique, and stressing a plant is thought to produce more resin. Like cropping or topping you promote the plant to grow out more then up. The plant gets bushier. Pinching will diminish the overall yield but not really the overall weight.

Proper cropping is done early in the vegetation cycle. The plant needs time to recover and that time will also set back your timing to finish.
