when can you top a plant, as in what stage, and how much, if at all, does it grow after you do so?

topping causes the plant to bush. do what trip says and train that fucker. tie it so the top is facing the ground. it will eventually start to face back towards the light, this will save a lot of vertical space, and it doesnt affect the plants health, or yield at all.

exactly, a zig zag. plus, you dont have to leave the plant tied for long, it will eventually get used to that position, and stay by itself with no restraints.
