I don't know. As I said, it depends on a number of factors, none of which you've posted such as the value of the bicycle in question, the jurisdiction and the specific charges the DA decides to file. It is not likely that he will go to jail, as a minor, but it it is not without precedent. At the very least, your friend ought to put in a call to the local Legal Aid Society, who can advise him for free.
