What you experienced are known as hypnogogic hallucinations. The precise causes are not well understood, but the phenomenon is not at all uncommon. They are implicated in many so-called "alien abduction" stories.

Its strange, I have only had one lucid dream before that i remember but yesterday had what I can only describe as a lucid dream while awake. I was stuck in some strange state of mind where logic played no role. I could percieve my thoughts as all these overlapping pictures. In the dream i was a velociraptor I could feel my tail and everything and during all this my eyes were open. When someone would say my name I would try to bring myself out of it.
