Ok I was contimplating doing the same thing with one of those rubbermaid storage containers and I've been told yes it would work but your plants will all have the same problems should some arise and if you get a male cut it down, don't pull it out or you'll damage others roots. But you'll need to go sea of green method tie down the tops to encourage outward growth rather than height! and of course good lighting, circulation and nutrition.
