My nephew turned 18 on sunday. He was allowed out for 4 hours to go home for his birthday. He has severe brain damage and has been in a brain injury unit for over 2 years now.His hands and feet need special straps so they dont stay clenched. He had a huge piece taken out of his skull the day of the accident and was just recently put back in his head.He has not spoken a word or moved his body or showed any signs of being normal at all until the last 2 weeks.I spent time with him on the weekend just me and him as i was always his favourite aunt he always told me.I was talking to him and joking with him about that he needed a haircut and he got the biggest smile on his face on the right side it made me feel for the first time that he recognised something and found it funny.I kept on and on at him only because i had heard that he is really trying to do things and was asking him to wave to me it took a while and he opened and closed his hands a few times (ive never even seen his hand move) then he said hi to me it was really really hard for him and barely recognisable but it was definatley that.Anyways this is the biggest miracle i have ever seen even though it may seem like no big deal it was the most exciting thing ever for me and i now realise there is hope for him even if it is just communication or knowing that he can hear us i feel so grateful.I didnt think it would be possible to start getting reactions after so long.
