Whatever you may think, there is an unavoidable tradeoff between security and privacy. I agree with you that the current state of affairs is largely unacceptable, but I expect things to settle down in a few years. In any case, if anyone wants to spy on my email, they're welcome to it. It'll probably put them to sleep.

Bear in mind that much of the Patriot I and II acts that are driving such legislation have not been tested in the Supreme Court. I fully expect that when they are, much of the teeth of both will be pulled.
