Correct a microscope (Radio Shack has pocket microscopes for a few dollars).
Trichomes look like little tiny crystals around the buds. Look closely at the small leafs sticking out of the buds and you should see thrichomes with the naked eye. A microscope (30X or more) will allow you to see the tiny clear, cloudy and amber trichome heads. The white hairs changing to red / amber will happen as the plant gets closer to being ready for harvest. You can try to harvest by red / amber hairs but checking the thrichomes with a microscope is the best way to get the final product you want.
