i was wondering if you leave the plant in the ground instead of harvesting it and just picking the buds........will it live to the next year and make new buds?

It will but not outside. The light hours arent long enough to keep the plant growing to stay alive. If you trans plant the plant to a pot and bring it indoors, you have a chance for a second generation.
