Its actually horribly uninteresting. On July 1, 1867 several politicians got the British North America Act signed. This meant that the four provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Eventually 7 more provinces and 3 territories joined as well.

What's funny is the British really didn't care that much about Canada when the act was signed, they were more interested in a dog tax bill that followed.
