WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Sunday he anticipates even more violence in Iraq and acknowledged that the insurgency â??could go on for any number of years.â?�

Defeating the insurgency may take as long as 12 years, he said, with Iraqi security forces, not U.S. and foreign troops, taking the lead and finishing the job.

The assessment comes shortly after the latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll showing public doubts about the war reaching a high point â?? with more than half saying that invading Iraq was a mistake.

The top U.S. commander in the Middle East appealed for public support of the soldiers and their mission. â??We donâ??t need to fight this war looking over our shoulder worrying about the support back home,â?� Gen. John Abizaid told CNNâ??s â??Late Edition.â?�

In a deadly week for U.S. forces, an ambush on a convoy carrying female troops killed four Marines, including at least one woman. At least 1,735 members of the U.S. military have died since the war started in March 2003, according to an AP count.

On Sunday, bombings in Mosul and elsewhere in Iraq killed at least 38 people.

Making the rounds
Rumsfeld, making the rounds of the Sunday talk shows, said insurgents want to disrupt the democratic transformation as Iraqi leaders draft a constitution and plan for elections in December to choose a full-term government.

â??I would anticipate youâ??re going to see an escalation of violence between now and the December elections,â?� the Pentagon chief told NBCâ??s â??Meet the Press.â?� And after then, it will take a long time to drive out insurgents.

â??Insurgencies tend to go on five, six, eight, 10, 12 years,â?� Rumsfeld said on â??Fox News Sunday.â?�

â??Coalition forces, foreign forces are not going to repress that insurgency. Weâ??re going to create an environment that the Iraqi people and the Iraqi security forces can win against that insurgency,â?� he said.

A British newspaper reported Sunday that American officials recently met secretly with Iraqi insurgent commanders north of Baghdad to try to negotiate an end to the bloodshed.

But then how come when colin and bush were talking to the UN they had their PR people on the news saying it should be over within weeks? You dont think possibly it was on purpose so people wouldnt raise too many questions?

Well it would take less time,if there were'nt so many folks rootin for the terrorists..everyone that hates or envies America,see the terrorists and insurgents,as the under-dogs and are hoping that they win.

Now that Iran has elected another hard-liner,things are going to git worse..even as we speak,strategic and tactical plans are being adjusted to account for the expected down-turn in relations with Iran and their military direction.

Those of you without direct experience with over-seas,muslim arabs,don't understand the way they think and live..they have a long ways to go,to catch up with modern society,and that's complicating things too. Like hard-line commies,who want a communist world,the fundy muslims,have a goal and dream,of turning the world into an Islamic State,Darfur.

Islam,is at war,with most of the world..it's time for the world to acknowledge that 99% of all conflicts today,are because of the global jihad,that Islam is waging against the Free World. Despite the best hopes of the Left,muslim jihadists are not the 'freedom fighters' that they make them out to be..they are cold-blooded murderers,who will eventually turn on their infidel supporters.

Their "infidel supporters" happen to be none other than the mighty UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Bin Laden himself received CIA training because America wanted the Afghani's to throw out the Soviets. Saddam Hussein was a long time friend and ally of the Bush Sr. administration.

Torog, you right. These terrorists are nothing but cold-blooded, ruthless killers. And in that fashion they are ironically the very mirror image of their American enemies, who rain cluster bombs on innocent civilians and dump radioactive wastes in the middle of a city.

I am afraid that being ruthless and cold-blooded is not limited to race. The only differientiating factor here is power.
