    Jimi Hendrix: Lyrical Genius

After all the jacks are in their boxes,
and the clowns have all gone to bed,
you can hear happiness staggering on down the street,
    footprints dress in red.

    And the wind whispers Mary.

    A broom is drearily sweeping
up the broken pieces of yesterday's life.
    Somewhere a Queen is weeping,
somewhere a King has no wife.

And the wind it cries Mary.

The traffic lights they turn blue tomorrow
And shine their emptiness down on my bed,
    The tiny island sags downstream
'Cos the life that they lived is dead.

    And the wind screams Mary.

    Will the wind ever remember
The names it has blown in the past,
And with this crutch, its old age and its wisdom
It whispers, "No, this will be the last."

    And The Wind Cries Mary.

Maybe I'm too stoned, but this song is fucking good. I've listened to Hendrix my whole life, and this is still his most prophetic and well-written song imo.

Yea that song is incredible,as is most his work. My favorites are probably red house, and third stone from the sun.

Damn right man, also 1983. And that's not even talking about the fucking sweet jams like Voodoo Chile. Dude was a genius.

I think you can tell something about an artist's talent by the way his work endures. I've been playing and listening to Hendrix since '67 or so; God, that's almost 40 years! I still haven't gotten tired of his work, still notice something I hadn't heard before from time to time. And I guess I'm not the only one. The Wind Cries Mary was one of the first of his songs I learned to cover. One well constructed song; along with Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, House Burning Down, Angel, etc. I'm not sure I know exactly what a genius is, but I think he was one.

Yes, 1983. It's been called his magnum opus. I've tried on and off for years to record my own version, still haven't managed to do it justice.

Hendrix is a legend, his music did'nt need lyrics. His guitar playing spoke to you. He is by far one of the greatest arists to ever have lived

They didn't NEED lyrics, but his lyrics are half the pleasure of listening to him. To me, his lyrics are just as grand as his guitar playing.
