Try and get a switchable. If not get a 400W HPS and you can buy a MH conversion bulb (works in the HPS) so you get the best of both worlds. Goodluck buddy!

HPS with a hortalux bulb will be fine. You can veg & flower with the hortalux bulbs so there is no real need for a MH to veg any longer.

Hello,
The addition of the MH light spectrum is still benefitial to the growth of the plants. Though a hortilux bulb does cover more of the spectrum than a regular HPS bulb, it does not cover the full spectrum that a MH bulb does, it is best to run both in my personal opinion.
I agree with Zandor though, if you only have the funds for one light system then I would go with the HPS along with the hortilux bulb.
Take care all
Peace

Most light systems these days will run both bulbs, HPS and MH.

You are correct GT but if I were buying a new transformer today I would look into the electronic ones. They are switching power supplies, but they also put out less heat then the old versions by far. I think the largest available is only 600w but that is changing fast.

Yes but where will you get your source of UV RAYS if you eliminate the MH?
MJ produces resin, in part, to protect the seeds and flower, and, UV RAYS are identified as being part of what increases resin production.
I dont think HPS puts out much in terms of UV Rays....do they?Any posts made by me are purely fictional in nature and by no means is anything I say to be taken seriously. Bulb technology has advanced so much over the last 3 years alone. There are new bulbs being introduced later this year that are even better then the current enhanced bulbs on the market today.
I will need to research a little so I don't quote anything wrong about your other question.
