i only ever had small ones... its harder to have 2fters when u live with ur rents

they're not necessarily better. Especially after a certain point where they are to big to clear comfortably. I think that the most important thing is the dynamic between the size/shape of the chamber and the size of the bowl, and the amount of water it holds. There's some small bongs you can get really huge rips off of and there are large ones that aren't so great.

I think one to one and a half feet is a good size, but I have one that's six inches and it hits really good too....anyway, my answer should by now obviously be that I don't have a fucking clue.

i think that a medium large one is best cause if its to big youll choke and have alot of smoke go stale in the chamber. if its to small its almost like hitting a bowl cause the smoke doesnt really gather up it just goes straight down.

Well, if you want a bong that you can take big rips from, get one with a decent-sized chamber (a 3 footer or so) but since your lungs can only hold so much smoke the larger chamber/larger hits principle breaks down after a certain size. For example, if the chamber is so tall you can't light it yourself, it might be too big for you to clear in one hit and therefore won't really work any better than a smaller bong.

But of course there are many more factors to consider in your bong than size. You should also take into account things like the material, whether it has a carb or slide bowl, how much water you can fit into it, how big the bowl is, and of course how cool it looks.

I usually don't fuck with bongs, but I was desparate and made one out of an apple...I'll save that for when I want to smoke on the d/l. Just go to the store and buy 12 pounds of Granny Smiths lol.

Personal preferance. In a slow moving circle, big ones are better IMO because you can get a couple lung fulls without actually hitting the bowl more than once, and thereby taking more than your fair turn. What this means, is you get more smoke each time the bong goes around, getting you higher faster. When you have to wait 5 to 10 min to take a hit, getting the most out of your turn is important. On the other hand, big bongs are heavy, and easily dropped. Also they tend to be more expensive assuming quality of materials/style remains the same between big/small. I enjoy smaller bongs most of the time however. Can't really explain why, they just seem more relaxed. I love hitting big bongs, but if I purchase a bong it will definately be small. It's something I'm going to hit on regular basis, and using a big bong is like hitting a grav bong on a regular basis. Sure it gets you really high, but sometimes its cool to just sit back, relax, and let the high come on slower.

So there is no quick answer. I think it comes down to the needs of the person/moment and personal preferance.
