In 2000, right-wing Republicans (yes, Republicans; W's cronies, in fact) slammed him mercilessly and rather unethically in South Carolina with push polls and other disinformation, effectively ending his campaign. And with the GOP being further to the right and more in bed with evangelicals, I don't see why that would change.
