From a chicken shit website:

"Chicken shit is very good fertilizer, but is considered to be a "hot" fertilizer, meaning that it should not be applied directly to the soil or around plants while your garden is growing. It's best if you compost it first, or do what we do, which is put it on the garden in the fall, after the growing season is finished, to break down over the winter. It can be tilled into the soil in the spring and will give your garden a big boost. Most all manure is high in ph, so if you put lots of it on, be aware that the soil will tend to become more alkaline. Potatoes will get scabby when the soil becomes more alkaline, for example."
