You're right that they COULD produce such a product. But it would greatly harm their profits from cigarettes, and that's a product that nobody can grow on their own at home. So the big tobacco companies have a monopoly on it.

It's going to take a HUGE leap of faith by politicians to lower it from a schedule 1 drug to a much lower rating before we can expect any changes in the laws. That's why joining groups such as NORML is so important. You don't think alcohol was made legal after prohibition because people stayed in the closet and kept in the dark. It took money.....in the hands of the government, in the pockets of politicians, and especially in the pockets of huge corporate big-wigs before it was re-legalized.
