    Will the DRAFT return?

When the Pentagon releases its May recruiting figures Friday, the numbers are expected to show a continuing decline in those signing up for the Army and Marine Corps.

If that downward trend continues, the specter of a military draft to fill the ranks with able bodies is likely to loom large in Washington once again.

Thats coming straight from the official Military.com website not a so called "leftest doom as gloom" site.

Dont forget Bush's blatant disregard for the immigrant situation. We all think Bush is being clueless but let's not forget that any person illegal or not that signs up for service gains citizenship. HOW CONVENIENT. So what do you think happens when the illegals drive down the wages and people are without work? Well the government will step in and offer the solution which will be that everyone should sign up! ill wait patiently for amsterdam's respectful and unbiased opinion anytime.

Be it Iran or North Korea who we invade next (either of which I'll be excited about, because Iraq was a bad choice), we'll see our troops spread even thinner and possibly an even larger deficit in recruiting. We are already sending a lot of reserve troops directly to Iraq upon their enlistment. I'm not saying a draft will be popular, but there will be that conflict(s) that comes along that makes a draft mathematically necessary. I'm not saying it'll be today or even 10 years from now, but there's no reason to assume that the draft died forever in the 70's.

We won't invade north Korea because we have too much invested in China...we are dependent on them economically now...and then of course we have Elaine Chou our Secretary of Labor that was born in China and her dad is the best friend of the Chinese president...and she has top security clearance...wow that makes me feel secure! North Korea is protected by China...

Very true about China, BlueCat. However, considering that China recently gave itself the authority to use military force over Taiwan (which we have vowed to protect), not to mention China's continually growing economic might that will increasingly threaten our interests, I will have to make a prediction that we will be clashing with China in this century.

Dude, I hope you are correct, but an amry cant fight with no soldiers and Bush has claimed his intent of wipeing out "terrorism" worldwide over and over.

I dont think he will be too willing to simply give up because the citizens of his country dont want to do his dirty work.

    Peace.

oh i hear ya man...i totally believe that the armed forces should be and always stay a choice. recruitment is down but its not down to the point of running out of soldiers. the IRR is still sort of a "backdoor draft" in terms since these soldiers filled their "active" TOS (term of service) but they still have on average about 5 years to finish "inactive". So for a soldier who is on his 4th year of IRR, if would really suck to be called back up for duty. But in reality the majority of what the military is missing are certain MOS's lets just say for example MP's, infantry, Transportation, etc. So that would limit who they can pull from the IRR to fill those spots.
I think if the military ever brought the draft back that they would have an even bigger problem on their hands with soldier's acting negatively, and in the long run it would cause more problems than good.

the draft wont return anytime soon, any politician who would even seriously push for it will find themself voted right out of office, theirs not enough public support for it and i doubt theyll ever be enough unless of course theirs another major terrorist attack on u.s soil.
