    Terrible foot cramps! any suggestions?

For about 2 weeks my left foot, and strangely only my left foot, has been a tad sore. then yesterday I got THE WORST FOOT CRAMP OF MY LIFE . pain beyond belief. now, I keep getting them unless I'm massaging and stretching it all the bloody time and it hurts just to walk. it's in the arch of my foot btw. I've been limping around the house all day, any ideas what's doing this, how to fix it?

By chance do you have Flat feet? Is it like a REAL sharp pain? See a doctor. He can suggest shoes meant for you're type of case not to mention other types of medications.

Massaging it while it's in the acute injury stage (which it sounds like it may be), could actually further damage the soft tissues in the area. Try resting it a little, some *gentle* stretching, & most importantly: ICE, ICE, ICE!!! Even just a pack of frozen peas wrapped in a dishtowel will work fine. At least 20 minutes, & if you have time, do a continuous cycle of 20 minutes on (ice), 40 minutes off. This creates a vascular pump, which helps flush out the area with fresh blood & will help repair. The ice also has an analgesic effect (pain relieving, numbing), which will feel great. For the first few mins you'll be swearing, but after that it will feel great.

For the future, make sure you're drinking plenty of water, as dehydration can cause cramping. Also, eat some bananas... they contain good amounts of potassium, which can also prevent cramping.

Please don't be offended, but the foot cramp thing reminded me of the situation in the movie Annie Hall. So my advice would be; let her get on top for a while.

hey....have a banana, milk and a bunch of water (seperately if you like...) I had the same prob and it could be dehydration or some other nutrtional defficiancies...IE low potassium or low calcium. Try it out, potatoes are also high in potassium, smoke a bowl, get the munchies and grub.

Actually, you're right, I barely have any arch at all, though I had no idea that would make me susceptable to foot pain.

btw, thanks for all the info too mlleyeuxblues . thanks everybody.

I've now come up with a theory as to the pain though. I have this big wooden record case in my room and when I do situps in my workout routine, I stick my toes under it and use them to hold me in place while I go up and down, which now that I think of it, is probably a strain on the tendons. I just did my situps an hour ago using mostly my right foot to support me, and sure enough my right one is bad now!

I'm relieved you weren't pissed off by my cheap shot, and I confess to similar problems in the past. You may have it figured out; repetetive actions can cause chronic pain, and you don't realize it, because they're so much a part of your everyday life.

A competition clutch on a hot rod Monza I once had caused terrible hip pains, ( seat location + stiff pedal ) and I never figured it out until I got another car. It never seemed to hurt while I was driving, but all the rest of the time I felt half crippled, didn't know why.

Also, a chop from Gypsey Eyes by Hendrix I used to play on guitar almost had me convinced I had arthritis, until a doctor checked me out and told me otherwise. Sometimes we bend our joints and things beyond their capacity without realizing it, and the only cure is to stop doing the thing that's hurting us.

    Welcome to the club.
