so how far back in history do we have to pay reparations for?

i seem to recall lots of dead native americans...have you paid them?

it would bankrupt the world if we all had to pay for past grievances.

Wow, for once I cant agree with you there pisshead. I dont know what your race is and it inst even important. I think reparations should continue for as long as they're needed. We live in an era of affirmative action where black people are given jobs that they may or may not deserve. People in affirmative action dont get paid more or anything they just get the job because it was a big problem that blacks werent even getting jobs in the first place. We still live in a society where people complain that blacks are given that in the first place. Have you ever been through a black ghetto? It's easy to say things about freedom when you've never had it really threatened. People shoot each other and all the media does is blame rap music and videogames. Noone ever says "well i wonder why they live like that with all these liberties and freedoms" because that would mean understanding that all those rappers rap about the life they live. Ashlee Simpson and sum41 and shania twain and all those "white music" (im not ignorant i dont know how to word it) artists sing and dance about being in love and how their life sucks because they can't get a date or they broke up with their lover. They sing about those things because that's the life they know and at the end of the day, music or not they're in a much better position just because of their skin color. Rappers rap about drug dealing and shooting glocks on the corner because that's the life they know and thats the life almost the entire community knows. Put 50 cent in a business suit and a Yale education and he's still got a whole lot to overcome to be successful. That goes for all blacks that arent privileged enough to be born above the poverty line. The government makes reparations to indians. They have casinos that bring in millions of dollars. The NA's in charge then disperse that throughout the people. If native american indians still live in poverty then that's because of the greed of their peers, not because blacks want more than they deserve. The fact is, blacks are still oppressed and its done subtly with big corporate commercials that show more ethnicities just to reap money from that section of the public. We watch television and then we pat ourselves on the back proclaiming about what wonderful advancements in cultural diversity the country is making. Then we all go to sleep not knowing that people are out selling coke and heroin because they've been born into a society that does it to make ends meet. You go to them and you tell them that the country has done all it can to make things better. You go and tell them that it's okay to use state property and funds that could be diverted to black health care and better schooling to demonstrate flying a flag that was used to showcase people's beliefs that blacks are sub-human and should only be used as agricultural fodder. You tell them that even though the Mexican President made racist comments about how his people are forced to do jobs not even blacks want and the government didnt even do so much as reprimand him even though blacks were insulted on an international level. If anything i've said is untrue then you should have no altercations at all. You tell them that we dont live in a society where blacks are ruthlessly given less than due process of the law on a frequent basis. Remember Rodney King? That was just one of many incidents we dont hear about. You go and tell them. If you can do that without sparking another three-day race riot, post back here and we'll toke as we message the board.

I dont think you're racist or anything like that. I think that you (like many others) have been led to believe that everything is fine and that blacks have every opportunity available. Truth is, we don't. Whites have their corporations and indians have their casinos. SOME black people have drugs that the united states refuses to legalise thus justifying frequent and constant arrests of people who have nothing in the first place. Everything's all nice and real balanced right?

not true...but where should the reparations stop then? are you for paying reparations to every group in history that's been treated badly? it would bankrupt the planet.

just tell me where it should stop? anything up to 200 years ago? blacks weren't the only slaves, and people all around the world have suffered, and continue to do so, including white people...who gets paid and who doesn't? it would bankrupt the planet.

should the government garnish my paycheck and give it to a poor black person? or a poor black person who had slaves for ancestors? or a native american who had an ancestor a few hundred years ago who was given a smallpox blanket?

i make just enough to pay all my bills and rent, and have a little left over for ganja and to save...

all i want to know is where does it stop? it's not my fault the feds ship in the drugs and use it to enslave people...ending the drug war would be a great start in stopping what's going on.

Comparing Indians to blacks, as far as how they have been treated historically, is like comparing rotten apples to rotten oranges. They're both equally terrible, but different nonetheless.

You can't put a price on the suffering both have had to endure at the hands of white people. But you can attach a figure to the wages lost by blacks during slavery.

Reparations will never be paid though, so it's a moot point. The figures I've read (upwards of $700 trillion) and other ethical and legal questions make that impossible. I was saying that to make the point that it's a fallucy to think "we've tried to make it better."

Idealistically, I'm all for the payment of reparations and the recognition of all treaties signed between the U.S. and Indians even though I know it will never happen.

Naw man, I'm just saying that reparations should be paid for as long as it takes. When I say reparations Im not just talking about some paycheck that's owed. Im talking about EQUAL health care, education. I'm looking for a cleanup of the inner-city black neighbourhoods. i'm looking for jobs that arent REQUIRED to be given to me because if affirmative action wasnt in places i could face unfair discrimination. In fact I'd still probably face unfair employment because companies only have to fill a certain quota. Once that quota gets made then they can go back to hiring all the whites they want. It's really fucked up. Nancy Grace bitches about all the suburban middle-class white girls that get abused which is terrible but I havnt seen her shed a tear for any of the black girls who prostitute themselves to make money or the girls who get raped all the time.

Look, what Im saying is that not all reparations are monetary. Even if blacks didnt get a dime personally, an official apology and the stance that things would be made right is enough.

I'm sorry, but I can't respect a flag that people carried into battle for a cause that, if fully realized, would have resulted in a separate slave nation. It's true that there's more to the Civil War than just slavery, but I could never feel pride waving a flag representing a society condoning such a barbaric practice.

Also...could anybody clear up for me why many people display the Confederate Flag next to the American Flag? I mean...The Confederate Flag represents a group of people who wanted OUT of the Union. Sure, many modern Confederate Flag wavers feel pride for the South AND the U.S. but one flag represents a complete opposition to the other.

The government under the US flag recognized slavery as well.

Nice, another southern pride toker. John C. Calhoun is the man!

I dont know why we live so comfortably that we believe that any and all exercises of freedom of speech are fundamentally good and non-abusive. I fully support any form, but I do believe that we have a penchant for allowing and condoning wantonly anti-free sentiment. Today, it's a proud few americans tipping their cowboy hat to their fallen heros of the south who pushed for ignorance and hate. Well what about tomorrow when we have a few proud southern historians proudly commemorating their ancestors who explored the brave new world of africa and even brought back souvenirs! The point Im trying to get across is that people should do what they want and should be denied access to government property and funds to do that.
