When I was younger I always said that I would be a totally cool dad and let my kids smoke pot. Now I'm 35 and have a 2 year old little girl and my thoughts have changed somewhat. I suspect a lot of you will also start to think differently the first time you hear "daddy" or "mommy" .

I started smoking pot when I was 12 or 13 and basically smoked my way through high school. I was the picture-perfect stereotypical stoner: long hair, tye-dye shirts, constantly red eyes,bad grades, busted for possession, etc. I barely graduated and for the first 4-5 years after high school I went from one crappy job to another. In my mid 20's I realized that something needed to change so I stated going to community college to try to make something of myself. Since then I've gotten degrees in psychology and international business, learned to speak a foriegn language, have a reasonabley good job, and recently bought my own house.

So, on the one hand I'm a living example of how even a hard core stoner can fuck up high school and still eventually graduate college and become fairly successful. On the other it was a long hard road to get where I am now and I'd prefer my daughter not have to travel the same road.

Of course I do realize that I'm assuming that everyone who smokes pot as a teen will be a total fuck up like I was. I know from this board that a lot of you younger kids have your heads pretty well put together. It's just hard not to want to protect my daughter from everything out there in the big bad world. I guess that's what daddys are for.
