My guess is that some grower didn't just plant just one out in the middle of nowhere.

Don't be so sure. I am about to plant and I do not want to attract alot of attention by planting a "crop" so close to eachother so I am planting my plants several feet away from eachother. So if one were to walk up upone a plant (VERY VERY VERY UNLIKELY WHERE I AM GROWING) it would look like just a random wild grow out in the middle of nowhere.

No, next time he may set up booby traps or sit there random nights and wait with a gun and shoot the person taking his stash.
