Carb
Ok, I understand the point of the carb on pipes that are made and bought from a store, off-line, etc. But when I make a pipe of my own or use a soda can, etc... I usually don't make a carb and it doesn't seem to make a difference. So why exactly do you need one on a factoryish made one? And is there a real difference besides in releasing pressure and smoke?

All I know is that when I let my finger off the carb, the smoke that would usually linger in the pipe goes shooting down my throat instead. I think that's what it's best for, just getting all the smoke possible.

efficiency. when you inhale without a carb, you are still stoking the cherry in the bowl. With the carb it let's air into the passage so you can clear the hit without lingering smoke & it doesn't stoke the cherry as much.

Ya, it's essentialy for clearing the pipe. When I smoke out of my spoons, I like to lift my finger on and off the carb rapidy when the smoke starts getting too hot, and I can take huge hits off them without hacking up a lung.

On a bong the main point of a carb is to clear the chamber, especially if it's a huge one. Of course, on some bongs you can have a bowl that slides out (called a "slide", for obvious reasons) and it makes it's own carb.

Carbs are a must
Vincent: I was washing \'em. But this shit\'s hard to get off. Maybe if I had Lava or something, I coulda done a better job.
Jules: I used the same fuckin\' soap you did and when I got finished, the towel didn\'t look like no god-damn Maxi-Pad.

Think of it this way:
On a bong you either have a slide or a carb. Both are to clear the smoke out.
Same principle with a bowl or anything else.
