Carbs are a must

Carb Ok, I understand the point of the carb on pipes that are made and bought from a store, off-line, etc. But when I make a pipe of my own or use a soda can, etc... I usually don't make a carb and it doesn't seem to make a difference. So why exactly do you need one on a factoryish made one? And is there a real difference besides in releasing pressure and smoke?
