You hit the nail on the head. The U.S media is responsible for a huge majority of Americans believing a load of shit.

Having spent some time overseas, living is a country that the U.S media loves to portray as a villian, I began to realize how full of crap the American media is. 99% of the things I had been led to believe about that country by the American media were incorrect. Don't get me wrong, the American media does not lie. It just tells half truths that are creatively worded that guide Americans to fill in the blanks incorrectly.

Why? It's all about money. People want to read sensational stories that get them riled up. That increases readership/viewership and that increases advertising dollars. If the government is behind those adverstising dollars, not directly but maybe giving some tax breaks or enacting legislation that is favorable to a given corporation, thus increasing their advertising dollars, than the media will respond accordingly.
