it's all got to do with the current presidency. American media portrays Americans as having a bad rap w/ the entire world, and it's only because there's a conservative in the white house. I'm not exactly a Bush fan (I'm mostly libertarian), but I can see things for what they are. TURN OFF YOUR TV!!! IT'S BRAINWASHING YOU!!!

Amsterdam is like any big city , there are risks but common sense tells you not to go buying shit off people on the street.
The place is policed reasonably and I find telling the street dealers NO thanks mate I have all I need is usualy enough for them to start looking for other customers.
I feel safer in Amsterdam than I have felt in any other major city , just remember to behave appropriately.

Be careful - I've posted a few things on this but on the whole
1) as with ANy big city, watch out for pick pockets
2) watchout for the afrikans fellows near bridges and street corners saying 'coca....charlie...extasy' - they will rip you off
3) If you smoking, avoid the area to the left of Damrak and take a wonder, and give up on coke and coffe - stick to the herb tea
4) People are very friendly
5) Only smoke gear in coffee shops, and if you bring your own in, you're expected to buy a drink
6) Dont attempt to buy any if you <21 - these peope are just trying to run a business after all
7) Outside of Amsterdam, its remarkably dull and conservative, and flat
8) English is mainly spoken, but you could be polite and attempt some dutch
9) Yes America tourists are easy to spot, but so are 'dope tourists' in general (its the eyes)
10) Dont stare at the red windows!!!
