If possible, I want to avoid involving 20 year old electronics, but it's looking more and more like my only option is to convert my old atari CX-40 9 pin to USB. http://www.gadgetmadness.com/archives/20040307-give_me_an_oldskool_digital_joystick_anyday.php So aside from this or a joypad, any other options?
