Legal for cops to leak information to a person's employer?

A few days ago I posted this story:

    http://boards.cannabis.com/showthread.php?t=18594

I am wondering if what the cops said to my manager at Dominos was legal. Let me elaborate. Here's the background of my story...

A friend of mine, we'll call her Jane, is also my manager at Dominos. Her sister works at the police station as a dispatcher. A few weeks ago I began to be suspicipus that someone had ratted me out as a marijuana user after getting busted, so I asked Jane to ask her sister to look up my record to see if there were any notes on me.

Jane called here sister from work, and that call must have thrown some flags 'cause after she called a cop called Dominos asking about me, when I left work, what direction I went, what kind of car I drive, etc. When Jane asked what it was about the cop responded that I am "associated with narcotics." She did a good job of giving no helpful information and said she'd have to check with the general manager to see if she was allowed to say anything else.

Well, I just found out tonight that she really did call the owner of the store and told him that the cops were looking for me.

So now the owner of my work thinks I am "associated with narcotics."

It really pisses me off that the cops would do something like that without having any evidence that I do indeed smoke weed. I am wondering if they were breaking any laws by leaking confidential information to my workplace.

I am very tempted to go to the police station and be very upfront with them. I want to demand that they write a letter of explanation to Dominos.

    Can anyone sympathize with me???

Yeah, I suppose it must be legal... although very unethical. Argh... I am getting annoyed with my little ultra-conservative town.

    LEGAL,that was nothing.

If you had the time and money you could slam a slander case against them. Technically he's allowed to say anything that's public record. But saying you're "associated with narcotics" sounds a lot more like he's trying to defame your character, which is slander. To prove it, you just need to show that he's going above and beyond, with an attempt for it to negatively impact your employment.

Is your record a felony or a misdemeanor? LEGALLY, in this beloved country (full of political hypocritical assholes), an employer can not find out if you have a misdemeanor record.
