two homo erectus walked in a forest and one saw this weird plant. so they smoke it and boom they get pretty high. so the guy said to his friend: damn this herb is crazy, lets call this pot.

To be honest, I never really knew that dope was used to refer to mj. Doesn't it refer to coke? I sure don't think it could be described as "an illicit, habit-forming, or narcotic drug", except for by naive peoples.

I always thought dope meant a drug which is a sedative and makes you 'dopey'.
You mainly hear cannabis being refered to as dope but I've heard heroin called dope before too.
In my area people call hash pot and/or weed. They call skunk either skunk or weed.
