How can you find out what kind of strain of weed you're smoking?

there is no way of telling what specific strain it is mate but you can tell if it's a sativa, indica or a mix of both (hybrid) once you smoke the buds. you can tell based on the effect

This is possible for long time smokers of pot but not for noobs. sometimes I could not differentiate also. Or may be I got the wrong buy from one of them hommies.
But there are those you can really tell right away from the hit itself.
