The pruning / topping isn't your problem, I'm sure.

This weed is one tough character, seems like it can survive about anything.

hum this is quite interesting. obviously the plants want to grow look how tall they got. so I would say your setup is completely fine for your needs.

I would look into the source of your seeds.................. if your using bag seed, a lot of bag seed is awesome and some isn't. you never know its a 50/50 chance.

I just chopped down 2 whitedream bag seed plants early because they weren't growing how I liked, nor wanted to spend the time & energy on. but on the other hand I have a few other bag seeds that are rockin out!

you never know... I have some pepper plants & corn growing also. same thing. some do some don't!
if your in a medical cannabis state, you can find seeds & clones with a click of a mouse.

oh yea, next run. don't top your plants. just grow it naturally so you get the hang of how these suckers grow.

most likely that is what i am going to do.. i kinda winged it just to see if it could be done with such a simple set up as i have..

a good update though the two tall ones are starting to bud i reckon... or flower how ever you want to say it i see where the buds are starting to form.. also my good buddy gave me a timer so no more guessing and trying to hurry home to catch the correct 12/12 cycle yay me

oh yeah i will take some more pictures in a few days .. this timer is just awesome for sure.. and i am thinking i might replant these babies into a bigger/better bucket for growing other than these smaller type containers i have them in now. i just put them in a few pots i had laying around the garden probably not the best but am going to go get some 5 gallon buckets when i get paid next

:icon506: <---- i totally want to do that to myself right now

sadly my first grow is about dead.. well here is the story...

i bought two new lights, installed them
got two 5 gallon buckets ( because 1 of my first 3 babies turned out to be male ... yikes!!! ... )

during replanting to their new forever home i must have in some way hit the bucket as i was picking up the bucket because it fell over and the handle flipped up and crushed the plant along with 5 gallons of dirt ... the plant was totally devistated.. like the leaves were all shriveled up and dropping.. thought that maybe just maybe it might be ok.. left it alone for a week and the leaves turned brown and died man i was soo pissed at myself.. i went from three down to two down to one plant in a matter of one mistake... so i started 5 more.. i plan on doing a grow log for those 5 plants, along with an experiment for my plants due to space limitations am attempting sea of green with them.

if my figuring is right yeah you can see some spotting where the bottom leaves were dying out ( i think that or over watering which i've ceased to over water lots of learning going on here )

so almost 3 months later here is meanie.. i have started 12/12 cycle.. but am not doing so well in keeping exactly 12/12 .. i got a few more that are behind in growth in same space so tenting it during the 12 off cycle.. good pic of my tent in a thread named tent materials... was thinking about going ahead with 12/12 for the shorter plants just so that i can utilized the timer i got lol.
