Does full shade equal "dark" period growing outside?

I'm at 45º, US Canadian border in New England. Plants are just starting to show. They are still very hard to tell. The one male I pulled so far was 4-5 feet tall and had only one flower. Six others have single, tiny flowers here and there. One has yet to show sex.
