cool hell yea use what you got at your disposal... no doubt.
i built my little setup with pvc pipe, to hang the lights, then i can also clip more lights on the sides to it, as the grow escalates. Its also setup so i can raise & lower the lights as needed this is (key actually)
i usually start with 4-6 lights in the veg stage for about 4-6 plants untill they hit about 1 1/2- 2ft tall. then i add more light, and eventually swap the bulbs out & start to flower when they are ready.
here is what my rig looks like.
so being that i had my lights a little more spread out. i could move the lights a little closer. which would promote more bushy than tall plants. unless you got some crazy OG strain that will try to touch the sky
cost about 20-40 bucks to build + cost of bulbs, and im so stoked at the results. I researched this for about 6 months before i got back into it. this is prob my 8th grow over a 20 years span.
until cfl's came out onto the market i always got crappy results. since MH & HPS were crazy expensive back then ( i never used ) ,. now adays CFl's give them a run for thier money. and way way less heat too!
and the whole thing with the reflector getting hot.. ha forget it.. dont wory about it.. unless your using 200w & 300w cfl bulbs then it may be a concern. as long as u got a fan in there blowing air around. your good to go.. I have my fan blowing on the lights actually, and im in a similar space to yours 4x4x8, the air circulates enuph and moves the plants around to stregnthen them.
actually on your setup, what i would do ,, is take out 2 bulbs from each cluster. and put 1 bulb in each corner of your grow space, about a half foot lower than your hanging above lights. this should give you an good steady even light array.
