Time expires on Texas medical marijuana bill
Marijuana Policy Project Alert: Texas May 12, 2005
Time expires on Texas medical marijuana bill
Unfortunately, H.B. 658, the affirmative defense medical marijuana bill, is officially dead for this legislative session. Texans for Medical Marijuana (TMM)ā??an MPP-grant recipientā??led a tremendous lobbying effort to persuade members who were on the fence. But in the end, H.B. 658 lacked one vote in the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee, and expired when a deadline to act on the bill passed.
While medical marijuana may not have found a toehold in Texas this legislative session, the work done this year has laid a solid foundation for the years to come. Medical marijuana is now on the agenda in Texas. And with 75% of Texans in support of medical marijuana, it is an issue that will only gain momentum.
You can capitalize on this momentum and help keep up public awareness by writing a letter-to-the-editor. The process is easy and takes only minutes.
Many people volunteered time and energy toward making H.B. 658 a reality. Especially inspiring was the courage of the patients who came forward to tell their stories, despite the risk of arrest andā??in some casesā??loss of public housing and medical coverage. These patients put a human face on medical marijuana, openly telling the press and legislators about the difference marijuana makes in the quality of their lives.
Though H.B. 658 is dead, TMM is not. In fact, Ruta Maya coffeehouse will be holding a benefit party for TMM on Monday, May 23, in Austin. Doors open at 7:00 p.m., and the cover charge is $5. Ruta Maya is located at 3601 South Congress Avenue. Get directions here. If you are in Austin, please go and support this worthy cause. You can find out more about TMM here.
Thank you for supporting the Marijuana Policy Project. Please pass this message on to your family and friends, so they can join the chorus of voices in Texas calling for compassion and reason.
