Microorganisms - Bacteria & Fungi
I'm not going to get too much into the science right now. I just observed that we don't talk about our plant helpers as much as we should.. microorganisms! I typed in mycorrhizae into the search engine and hardly any posts came up. I typed it in as many different ways I could think because its very easy to misspell it.. not much more results. If you type in Miracle Grow you'll get pages of stuff. Makes me wonder how much of our growing is "hippy feel good gardening" and how much of it is product based (buy these nutrients and that soil, etc.) rather than science based. Anyhow, I bring this up because I germinated two seeds of the same strain, both which popped in less than 24 hrs. One popped twice as fast as the other and took off. I wanted to see how mycorrhizae in the soil would affect the germination of both, because it helps the plants out from seed, not just mature plants. I deliberately took the seed that germinated faster and put it in regular potting soil to give it an advantage. I took the other seed and mixed mycelium infused mulch in with the potting soil. I was sure the seed that looked to be more vigorous was going to take off but the exact opposite happened. The one w/ mycorrhizae in it broke ground faster, is much more vigorous, has a brilliant green color and is more than twice the size of the other one, mind you I put the seed that was germinating much faster in the regular soil.
It just makes me think, genetics are great and so are nutrients but there is so much symbiosis and mutualism present in nature that it only is right that we look more into these things to see what the benefits are. Mycorrhizae helps pull water and nutrients from the soil into the root zone and can grow much faster than the roots and extend out into areas roots may never reach. Just something to think about. If anybody has anything to add please do so because I'm trying to figure these things out!MDFinest Reviewed by MDFinest on .
