The colors of the hairs are only part of the cycle of the plants life. They change color by temperature and maturity at the end of their life cycle. The only true way to know when to harvest is to view the trichomes with a 10x to 30x microscope. Mature trichome looks like a golf ball sitting on golf tee, big and round on the top. The color is clear to cloudy. Cloudy is peak for that trichome. Because there are millions of trichomes you need to harvest on the average. They will continue to mature through the drying process for a day or more. Amber color is past prime for that trichome so you are just looking for an average.

you really should have at least an 8-10x magnifying glass. they're almost essential for checking trich's and useful for diagnosing other probs. and they don't cost much...got mine at ebay for 12 bucks incl s/h. radio shack sells pocket microscopes that are good for extra-close looks and are under 15 bucks...but the loupe or mag glass is a must-have, imho...
btw, i put mine into a "dry period" the last couple weeks before harvest...i cut way back on the water and give only enough to keep them from wilting. but i also quit all ferts 1 month before harvest then water normally for a couple weeks for the flush, which is varied according to the grower's use of ferts throughout the grow. i use very little (4 applications throughout the grow) so major flushing isn't needed.
