"At Home Drug Test" => Passing drug test?

    Hi everyone,

I was offered a great job, and of course they perform drug tests before hiring.

I haven't been a heavy smoker for several months, but recently went on a trip to the Bahamas and smoked about 4 times in the span of a week. The day I came back (a Wednesday), I was told that I would have to take a drug test on Saturday. So I started slamming water.

I bought two "At Home Drug Test" kits for THC, and took one on Friday; it came back negative. So far so good.

The morning of the test, I hydrated and took the second test 1.5 hours before my real test, and it came back negative again.

Is it likely that I passed the real test?

"At Home Drug Test" => Passing drug test?

In case it helps, the test was a 9-panel DOT pre-employment screening administered by Quest Diagnostics. I didn't quite know how to interpret the paperwork, but it looks as though the specimen was supposed to be sent to Applicant Insight.

I'm a little confused here, because I've read that, with DOT testing, Quest can't actually test the specimen; they need to send it off-site (in this case, to Applicant Insight). But I've also read that Quest will perform the initial screening and only if it comes back positive will they send it off-site. Apart from my primary question above, can anyone provide some clarification on this?

If youre taking a 9-panel screen, then youre not taking a DOT test. DOT regulations only allow the testing of 5 types of drugs - not 9:

DOT Rule 49 CFR Part 40 Section 40.85 | Department of Transportation

With DOT testing, there are regulations and protocols that must be adhered to by all collection facilities and labs participating. Failure to follow the procedures can result in the nullification of the drug test, as well as serious sanctions imposed by the Agency which includes, but not limited to, the loss of certifications to conduct DOT testing. And since DOT testing is primarily a labs bread and butter, this would spell the end for them as a business.

The rest of the DOT regulations are found in their entirety right here:
Procedures for Transportation Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs | Department of Transportation

I appreciate the clarification on that. I had seen "DOT" on the form, but I obviously interpreted it incorrectly.

    So:

    1. Does Quest Diagnostics send the specimens off-site, or do they perform the preliminary drug screening in their lab?

    2. Is it likely that I passed my test?

If this was truly a DOT test, you wouldve witnessed the collector:

    - Split the sample 30/15 (in bottles with your initials on them).

    - Bagged, tagged specimen to be sent off to a facility for analysis.

Under the DOT regs, the collector has to perform these functions in your view. With that being pointed out, you have the answer to your question.
